The island of Syrii which is mentioned in Homer’s “Odyssey” can in all probability be identified as the Syros of today. The earliest signs of habitation are from the end of the neolithic era, between 4000 and 3000 B.C. During the period of prosperity of the Cycladic civilization (3200 – 2000 B.C), the celebrated civilization of Syros – Keros developed (Halandriani, Kastri).
The latest historical course of Syros was marked in 1207 with its occupation by the Venetians and the foundation of a medieval town. Syros was administered by the Turkish Empire in a remarkably privileged manner and during the Revolution of 1821 it was made into a French protectorate, providing a safe haven for the persecuted refugees who had fled from other parts of Greece. The result of this was fantastic commercial and cultural growth until the beginning of the 20th century.
