Syros is part of the island complex of Cyclades and constitutes its geographical, administrative and commercial centre. It covers 86skm of land, is 22.5km long and is 83 nautical miles away from Piraeus and 62nm from Rafina. Due to its 21.390 inhabitants, Syros is the largest in people, Cycladic island.
Ermoupoli is the capital of Syros as well as of Cyclades. Ermoupoli was formed in the perimeter of the large natural port in the east and it was the commercial, maritime and industrial centre of the new Greek state. The second municipality of the island is Ano Syra which is located in the cone-shaped hill above Ermoupoli.
The ground is principally infertile and rocky with steep mountainsides in the north. Still, in the southern part, there are lowland, arable areas. The majority of the beaches and villages of Syros is there.
